Description:

Historically, food packaging has been used to containing and conserve food quality, as well as to transmit specific information during the distribution chain or to the final consumer. In recent years, the development of novel food packaging with active and intelligent properties has not only increased the shelf-life of foods, but also the information transmitted to the final consumer about the real state of food.

This special issue encourages the submission of original research papers, review articles, and short communications focusing on recent advances and future perspectives in the use of active packaging to improve food safety and quality, as well as the use of intelligent packaging as a tool to bringing convenience to consumers.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

    • Active packaging based on scavenging and releasing systems;

    • Application of bioactive compounds and nanoparticles in food packaging technology;

    • Improvement of sensory quality using active food packaging;

    • Intelligent packaging based on indicator, data carrier, and sensor systems;

    • Development of active and intelligent packaging by extrusion and thermo-compression;

    • Delivery of active compounds from food packaging;

    • Migration of active and intelligent packaging constituents to foods.
